Linkle Liver Story released :)

Surprise-surprise :) After a long silence, I am proud to present the full translation for the partially undercover project. This time it's a Sega Saturn game called Linkle Liver Story which was a collaboration effort between meself, paul_met and Pennywise :) Enjoy the playing and BUY the game if you like it!

Almost forgot, the translation is here.

And the fully translated full color manual is here.

Cheers and a Happy New Year!

  1. Ummmmm, this very game's fan here. Just wanted to tell the team behind dejapping that we (know about this obscure gem's existence) highly appreciate all your efforts put to bringing this project up to its official release. It's such an inspiration to know there're folks who really care about those unfairly forgotten games like this one. A thousand thanks to you all guys and keep it up!

    1. Trust me they aren't hidden or forgotten :) I've looked or played through every single rpg-like game of that era, and consider that a hint, but I hope we can surprise you with something else this year ;)

    2. Thank you for this! Great job on translating the manual as well. Looks Legit! The manual is one of the things i miss most when it comes to modern games. I would spend hours pulling out all of my game manuals reading character bios.

You're a courageous one. I tried the same as project back in 2015 (playing all the Sega Saturn/PSX RPGs) and got lost in that SRPG where you play as some girls with monster spirits. I forgot the name, but it was a very interesting game.

      And thanks for the translation!

    4. Yeah, I know what you mean. It's a dire shame they refuse from paper-based manual nowadays :( I have like 99% of disc-based rpg-like games (PCE, SS, PSX, PS2 and so on), and I can tell you, manuals were the reason number 1 I bought them from the start (if not a collector's edition).

    5. "Dejapping"? Really? Fucking gross, don't do that

  2. Well holy carp. I was just staring to poke around this game, seeing if I could figure out where the font was stored, and all of a sudden you guys show up.

    This is *awesome*

  3. By anychance can you guys do Cyber Doll next? It's on the Sega Saturn as well.

    1. Console or emulator? It's your own game image?

    2. Here is a comment from RHDN since I always use my own images:
"Just a note for anyone else who found the patching a tad confusing: the Redump version has multiple .bin files, and this patch should be applied to the first one with the tool mentioned in the readme. I'm sure I won't be the last one to be confused by this, so I though I might mention it (I can imagine patching CD-based games will be a bit of a pain, though I've not done it much myself)."

    3. Console. Md1 saturn with persnu saturn. Ill try again fingers crossed and hope for the best im not the most tech savvy

    4. I personally passed the game on my Saturn (with a card reader installed). In case you have a disc drive in, I would recommend grabbing the image with Clone CD, patching it and then burning again. The game has a couple of pesky audio track which break quite a bunch of emulators making them impossible to use. Unfortunately, can't advice you more on this :(

    5. Ive tried again i think ive missed something as it dont work. ill have to hope one turns up on ebay and ill patch it then unless it turns up already patched :(

    6. We'll see if anyone else confirms this.

  8. Amazing work you guys, I definitely want to play this gem on an emulator because my console died years ago, I patched it successfully but I'm encountering issues, I will explain:

The image that my friend made for me (from my original Japanese disk) is in Clone CD format, the folder has 3 files in it which is in these extensions: .ccd, .img and .sub, these files which was ripped from my original disk works on 2 emulators that I tried which is SSF and Yaba Sanshiro, both emus play the music from the intro animation just fine but when I push a button to skip that intro and go to the intro screen the music doesn't play in SSF, however, it does play in Yaba Sanshiro but since the game is in Japanese I won't play it again in those emulators. It seems that SSF is having issues(?) with the music in the intro screen but no biggie, I can still play this in Yaba Sanshiro.

However... after patching the .img file with the english translation with PPF-O-MATIC v3.0 the game works, it's in english now however... the game is having the same issue with the intro screen music, it doesn't play in both emulators now which is odd, It still has the SFX effects and you can still listen to music in the option screen but the normal intro screen doesn't have the music anymore. I don't want to start a new game knowing that the music might not play later on because of the issue I described.

The summary for that wall of text is this:

My Japanese rip that my friend made from my original disk has the intro screen music in Yaba Sanshiro but not in SSF, after patching the game with the english translation the intro screen music doesn't work in Yaba Sanshiro no more so both emulator is having issues in the intro screen now. Can someone point me to the right direction to make the intro screen music working in Yaba Sanshiro with the english patch? if you can help me getting that issue to work in SSF as well then that would be better, I rather play this in SSF.

    Thanks.

  9. Yes, unfortunately, that intro issue is well-known to use and it's exclusively emulator-related. For now, the intro music works on SSF and possibly on yabasanshiro. Not anywhere else. This game is quite unique with using its midi tracks, and emus have issues with both original and translation (we have specified this in the readme and notified some emulator developers thereof - no response so far but hopefully mednafen will make it compativle eventually). There are 2 instances in game with this issue which is the one you've mentioned and the another one - in the ending credits. Console, fortunately, has no issues at all and generally plays the game much faster with no lags or whatssoever.

PS: Try cue/bin format ripping for emulators as well. CCD is the best for Saturn, but bin might just work for emulators. As I said before, this particular tune is stored in separate files and loaded slightly differently, but I assure that we touched none of this stuff at all :)

    1. And yes, except for those 2 music pieces, the game is also playable and passable in yabause 0.14 version (which I did myself).

  10. Thanks for your reply, I have gotten the intro music to finally play in SSF with my Japanese ripped copy, to fix that issue I had to delete "LINKLE LIVER STORY.bin" inside the folder "CDIndex", however, the same thing happens once I try patching the game with the english translation, once it's patches then the music won't play anymore. I believe the issues are errors from my part because if you got it working then there's something that I'm obviously doing wrong. I will explain my patching process, hopefully you can help me from there:

My unpatched folder has 3 files in it with these extensions: .ccd, .img and .sub, now I open PPF-O-MATIC v3.0 and select the file .img and the .ppf file and patch the .img file. What comes next is what I'm probably doing wrong, you see, the .img file is in english now, however, the other 2 files ".ccd" and ".sub" is not compatible with the new patched ".img" file anymore, and hence, opening the .ccd file from Daemon Tools is not working anymore, opening that .ccd in Yaba Sanshiro is not working anymore either so I have to select the .img file directly in both Daemon Tools or Yaba Sanshiro, once I do this the game works but the music won't play in the intro music anymore. I believe I need to open the .ccd file somehow and edit it with the new information of the patched .img file to get it to work.

Hopefully you have a better idea of what I'm doing wrong and guide me from there. Thanks.

    1. Using the same procedure and it actually works, lol :) Then, it might be purely emulator issue. I will address the programmer here or to RHDN, but I'm pretty sure the patch doesn't affect the cue part. Again, try converting it to bin. Through Daemon Tools, and THEN patch it.

      Delete
    2. I can see the programmer already answered your question at RHDN. Yes, the game is very special with using its CDDA tracks, which makes it a diehard item for emulators...

      Delete
    3. After I posted that I fixed the issue, it was actually a mistake from my part. I renamed the .img file "before" patching it, that caused the error I was having, I needed to leave that .img intact because apparently it contains important information that the other 2 files recognizes, if the .img is renamed and patched then those important information changes and it won't work anymore. Because of this renaming the "patched" .img back to the name it had before won't work anymore with the other 2 files, apparently those CDDA tracks are pretty sensitive to changes if you rename the .img file before patching.

It was a dumb mistake from my part but hopefully others people having my issue can fix it now. Thanks.

  11. 1st test on SSF_012_beta_R3 - patch works great. I use CloneCD image, mount on Alcohol, convert to BIN+CUE in IMGBURN. Apply patch and play fine.
Tomorrow time to burn and test on real console ;)
PS. Any chance to translate RiglordSaga2 or Black/Matrix?

    1. Clone CD is the best for the console burning and playing (I have a card reader installed instead of a disc drive), but bin/cue apparently better for emulators.

  14. Oh man, THANK YOU VERY MUCH for this translation, I bought this game years ago in Japan because I liked the front art (and was very cheap) and I always wanted to play it, but in Japanese and with other games in the list I never do it, but now, finally I will be able do it. Thanks man again and I hope see more translations of Saturn games from you. Maybe Princes Crown?.

  15. I just wanted to say thank you for this. I needed another lighthearted game to play before drowning in the sea of modern FSP games and this is a standout gem from the 32 bit era. Again, thank you.

  19. man I've been trying so many Image files but none work. I ordered a sealed copy of the game to rip it my self then patch it. when I do I'll share it. also working on making a DVD cover, CD disc art closely looking like the original and resizing the booklet to fit the DVD case. message me on twitter for details @cliffsrepaircor

    3. UPDATE: I got the unopened copy of the game and the patch applied perfectly. I've been working on making high res scans of the booklet, cd, spine card, and back slip. @asishsha if you can contact me. I'd like to talk to you about a few things. my twitter handle is @cliffsrepaircor

  20. Thank you very much for the effort you have done in translating this game. Besides you, I say God Bless ALL translators of all systems who take the time and effort to do this for us who really want to play the Japanese games as well as the domestic classics. I don't know if you just do games for Saturn, however, I really do hope you will consider translating the original "Final Fantasy" for famicom, but also the original "Snatcher" in the future for PSX.

  22. Thank you so much for doing this! I bought an import copy from Japan since there aren't even ROMs online, dumped it to computer, added patch, and now burned it and keep blank CD along with original disc in the orig. Japanese jewel case. It looks amazing on a Saturn with SCART RGB going into OSSC also, great translation to a great hidden gem! Thanks again for all your hard work!

  23. Awesome work, I have just finished this game in SSF and have no problems. As a person who got problems with learning Saturn emulation I am grateful for method You chose to apply patch, it was easy. Saturn got so many hidden gems that stay out of my reach due to Japan langue and my lack of understanding it.
P.S. What does darkens seed do in game? I have found it in Thunder ruins but it seems that I can not plat it in four seasons island.

    1. I wish I remember how to do that, but both Light and Dark Seeds are used for weapons just like all others.
