PopoloCrois Monogatari in English.

Well, it's finally happening. Years of plans, months of work. The game that brought me into the scene in the very first place. Go buy the Japanese version  of ebay or something. It's bloody worth it.

Grab the Patch here.

And the Manual is here.

PS: paul_met, Pennywise, Matatabi, Illidan et.al. Personal thanks, guys, it wouldn't have happened without you all.

  1. any plans to get it working on real hardware?

    1. For the moment, it works perfectly on pretty much every PS1 emulator (including mednafen and PSP eboot). Checking it on real hardware is rather difficult since mine is well... long dead. Where exactly it breaks down, and how exactly you applied the patch, burnt, etc.?

    2. UPDATE: Not sure if it was you on twitter, but we'll try fixing it soon.

    3. Try rebuilding sectors 0~22 and BOOT sector to the same HEX as the Japanese original and see if it works on real hardware, maybe it will. By the way, the game is working so well in everything I've tested, that I don't think such a modification is necessary, check how the CD was burned and if it's of good quality in addition to the PS1's optical drive, which should be good.

    4. It might as well be a bios issue of the console, and we already have a patch which might allow bypassing that issue, but we need for a guy to test and see.

    5. But, yes, we always try making it playable on real hardware so we'll try fixing this as a priority.

    6. And as another update - seems like the issue has been localized. Will be prob fixed in the next incremental patch.

  2. Thank you for this translation.

  3. Reached Chapter 3 and so far the translation's very high quality, I can't thank you enough for making this patch, this is my dream come true. FYI I've noticed a few typos and 1-2 screens with some messed up tiles in case you ever plan on updating this

    3. Also regarding the whole dubbed narration thing, I don't think the girl/whoever it was who was picked was the best choice but I completely understand why it was done and it doesn't ruin the whole game for me like I've seen said by a few crybabies, I imagine if you were able to add subtitles to those cutscenes instead you would

    4. We could since paul_met is one of the best hackers around, we just opted not to since we liked the idea and the result. And thanks for the screenshots!

    5. The "must needs" is no typo, lol. It's just archaic ))) I have a question, though, what kinda emulator do you use? Those sprite stuff definitely look like an emulation issue - I know where they are taken.

    6. Beetle PSX HW core in RetroArch

    7. Try the most stable ones such as ePsxe, PCSX or MedNafen. I'll check these two cases, but I have a feeling they will not occur on those emulators. We had a similar issue reported on SwanStation, which also worked fine on other emus as well. The best way to check is just to load an original image - if the issue remains - it's the 100% the emulator stuff.

    8. Okay I've experienced my first really bad bug- the game crashes after saying yes to the Gottlief minecart NPC in chapter 4 (when he warns you about monkees being in the tunnel), it happens on every emulator I've tried

      Delete
    9. Can you please provide a memory card save? The closest to that place. Likely in Gotlief. We'll check that out.

      Delete
    10. An epsxe save state will do as well.

    11. Managed to copy my save over to an unpatched image and back after crashing the minecart as a workaround

    12. Send something like a save state or memory card (better), please. That particular event has several options depending on whether you found the Dragon Sword or not.

    13. Thanks, this will be fixed under the next patch.

    14. You by any chance have a memory card save right before the end of Chapter 3 somewhere? Needed to check another little thing on the Dragon Saber quest line.

      Delete
    15. Unfortunately I don't because I only first discovered the quest line in chapter 4, sorry

  4. Wonderful work! Since you mentioned possibly updating this patch in the future, would it be possible to offer an alternative version with subtitles instead of dubbing for the narrated segments? I assume the voice actor was working off of an already finished translated script, but you know better than me how much work it would be to add that script as subtitles.

    1. No, that's not on the plans, and they won't be. The original game itself uses both subbed narration and non-subbed narration, as you will noticed in a specific cutscene later on, and we decided to stick to the original style as much as possible.

    2. I too would want this and seeing a comment above how it could be hacked in, it's a shame. Maybe another group will have an updated patch with subs instead of dubs. Especially for those people that can't hear the audio.

    3. If anyone else would want to make their own translation, they, of course, have every right to do so. Ours will stay as is.

    1. I also love the Boku-no series. Alas, we have no current plans to do it, but I did hear some rumors about someone else working on it, just don't remember where or when.

  6. Wow, great! I literally got this game two weeks ago in a bundle from Japan and I was thinking about getting PSP version just to be able to play it in English... now I don't have to ^^ Great work!

  7. hello, i'd like to report some bugs. First, the narration is bugged because it's sounds like english, i think the audio file is corrupted because it's should have been japanese because i tried the original unpatched game and the narration is japanese. Also, there's no subtitle for that said narration, maybe you misplaced some code so that didn't appear?
And then some of the character's name is wrong, like paolo, his real name is paulo.

    1. First, I think it's time for you to understand that's not a Japanese original but English translation. Hence, if there's Japanese dub in the original, we'll make everything possible to make the same dub but in English. Also, no subtitles were planned there, but thanks for your report, since we'll try to do everything so no one could misplace the current code, and the translation stays as is. And then, some of your knowledge is wrong. Like all of it. Go read some books. Or not, doubt it will help you. PS: I'm grateful for you trying to play smart, but you're not. The standup comedian career is definitely not for you. Try something else. Like a chief mourner.

  8. Hi lord. Please upload the japanese dub version.

  9. Hello, I would like to express my thanks for this translation as I have loved this series ever since I played the butchered remake on PSP and I’ve always wanted to play the original. I have played it to completion now and had an absolute wonderful time so once again thank you to you and your friends.
I just want to know if the group that worked on this might have any plans to work on the second game or at least touch up the existing project that has all the npc dialogue machine translated.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. In short - yes, for the whole series. The PopoRogue would come first on the list. I can't tell you about any deadlines, though, because of the place I live in and some time to rest from PopoloCrois universe for some time (by doing some other projects in between).

  10. Thanks for this translation. It came as a surprise to me since I never thought I’d get to experience the original game for a series I really love. Is it fair to expect that your group will work on a fan translation for the second game? I know it has a fan translation done but all the npc dialogue is machine translated.

    1. Yes, as I answered before somewhere. But probably after some other projects and PopoRogue ('cause this comes before the 2nd).

  11. Man whoever got you setup as the PR person should move it over to someone else. You're always going to get goofy comments but responding just with a middle finger or other hostility is silly. For future projects to have years of work marred by a dick attitude is strange.
This was stated earlier as solid advice: "The standup comedian career is definitely not for you. Try something else. Like a chief mourner"

    1. Dude, you simply don't get that physical threats, whining, spamming the same thing over don't work at all, do you? Well, for starters, this was never a PR attempt since none of you kids can grasp the idea that this is neither a shop nor a market. Second, when you try spamming or threatening - you at least scrap that empty skull of yours and try learning how to use VPN or something as your IPs are so damned visible. Thirdly, when you have a solid comment or advice - it's always welcome, is and will be responded appropriately, but if you come to my personal place with your political position, whining, trying to launch a shitstorm - trust me, I've dealt with this shit in my entire life so you're gonna drown in that as soon as you open your mouth.

Since you're quoting me already - that advice of mine fits you perfectly as apparently, neither lecturer nor psychologist fits you either - feel free to mourn.

  12. Big thanks, really enjoying this translation! It's incredible how much better the original is compared to the PSP remake! I knew there was some cut content, but didn't expect so much differences!
I've encountered a few graphical glitches though(playing on Duckstation), when escaping a battle there's like 30% of chance that the enemy graphics will glitch or show white/gray borders for a second. It's really quick so I can't print it.
Another very small one happens when you open the map in the sunken ship area, Pietro sprite will show white borders when facing up. https://imgur.com/a/eC1nDd4

    1. The escape battle stuff is most likely the emulation issue since I never faced it during my three playthroughs on epsxe. The Pietro sunken ship stuff is most likely supposed to be so, since that area lies beyond the map as such. You can check if it's a real glitch or not by playing the original version (memory card saves are compatible for both).

    2. Will check the ghost ship sparks - thanks.

    3. Just tested and indeed the escape bug happens even in the original japanese version. So much for the ultimate ps1 emulator...

As for the map glitch, I am not talking about Pietro's sprite position, which indeed makes sense as the area lies beyond the map, but the small white line that shows up at his left. It's very small, between the O and L of Popolocrois so it doesn't surprise it hasn't been noticed yet. I've tested on the unpatched game and said glitch doesn't happen.

Also as of 1.1 I noticed the map behaves strangely the first time you open it after loading a save, showing a black background and not showing up town names. It fixes itself when you move the map to the right, but if you move it to the left, this happens: https://imgur.com/a/YA1sFCV I've tested the same save on the japanese version and the bug doesn't happen.

    4. We found that, yeah, the reason has been detected, too. Hopefully, will be fixed soon - thanks!

  14. A few more bugs I have found: https://imgur.com/a/HH15HhC

The characters portraits in the menu have palette errors, principally GamiGami. While this could be another Duckstation issue, it looks fine when I open the same save on the japanese game. The others are just a small typo in sunken bryonia and extra space before Kai's name when you win a battle while Pietro is unconscious.
